Dinosaur Count and Clip Cards

Objectives: Counting, fine-motor development

Directions: Have your child count the eggs in the mama Maiasaurus nest. Then have him or her clip a clothespin on the corresponding number. If you do not have clothes  pins, your child can point or place a small toy object on the corresponding number to make it fun!

Build-a-Dino Activity

Directions: Dinosaurs can be made out of shapes. Using cut out shapes, create your very own Shape Dinosaur. Encourage your child to name their dinosaur using their name or a name of their choice for example “Shellysaurus.”  Ask him or her why they choose the shapes and the name for their dinosaur.

Materials needed: Cut out paper shapes, paper and glue.

Dinosaur Play Dough Counting Mat

 Objectives: Counting, building number sense, number recognition, building fine-motor skills

 Materials Needed:

  • Dinosaur Counting Mat

  • Number cards

  • Scissors

 Play Dough Directions:

Print the blank mat for your child. Next, reproduce the cards on page 6. You can choose to use the cards 1-10 or 1-20 depending on the ability levels of your child. Cut the cards apart and place in the middle of the table in a bowl or basket. Your child will select a card and roll or shape play dough to create the correct number of dinosaur bones on their mat. They can continue choosing cards and adding bones to the skeleton until it is complete. Have fun!

 Playdough Ingredients:

2 cups plain flour

1 cup salt

1 tbs oil

1 cup cold water

2 drops liquid food coloring

Line of Symmetry

(Mirror)

Encourage your child to make their very own line of symmetry:

  1. Take a piece of notebook paper, printer paper, or construction paper.

  2. Hold it so that it is vertical. Ask your child to show you a vertical line in the air with their index finger. If they need a reminder, ask him or her to show how they lined up at school.

  3. Fold the paper perfectly in half. Make sure all of the edges line up. Give assistance only if needed.

  4. Have your child open their paper and see if the two sides look exactly the same along the fold!

Ask the question: Do you think the paper could be folded another way to create a second line of symmetry?

5.  Give your child another sheet of paper. Have your child fold the paper perfectly in half. Only assist if needed.  Open the paper and place washable paint in the middle and close it perfectly in half.  Have your child gentle move their fingers on the paper. Open the folded paper gently, and ask your child what he or she noticed. Have fun!

Transforming Paper

 

What kind of shapes can you make with a sheet of paper? 

Step 1. Show your child a sheet of paper and talk about the shape properties of it. Step 2. Fold the paper in half.  What shape does he or she identify? Step 3.  Fold the paper one more time and ask your child what shape he or she sees now?  Ask the question, how do you know?  Review the shape and its properties with your child.  Step 4. Slowly open the paper and count how many shapes you have. It is like magic! Now, give you child a sheet of paper and encourage him or her to make their very own shape.

Snapshots (Adding)

  • Secretly put three counters (small object) in one of your hands and three counters in the other. Show your closed hands, and then open them for two seconds, closing them immediately after.

Finger Games

 

  • Your child will be making numbers with their fingers. First, have him or her keep their hands on their laps.

  • Ask your child to show 5 with their fingers using both hands. Observe: How many on one hand? How many on the other? Ask how many fingers do you have altogether? Ask your child to show you another way to make 5, using both hands.

  • Repeat, ask your child to describe their actions, and alternate the following: show 4 on both hands, and show four a different way.

I’m Thinking of a Number

  • Using Counting Cards, choose and hide a secret number. Tell your child you hid a card with a number, and ask him or her to guess which it is. When your child guesses correctly, excitedly reveal the card. Until then, tell your child whether a guess is more or less than the secret number.

  • As your child become comfortable, ask why he or she made their guess.

  • Use the ladybug printout number flashcards, or any number flashcards you have available.

Listen to the story Three Billy Goats Gruff with your child. After the story, tell your child they are going to pretend to be a goat leaping across a bridge in groups of 3.  Count to 30 or more in patterns of 3, such as 1, 2, 3 (pause), 4, 5, 6 (pause), 7,8, 9 (pause), and so on.

Gone Fishing

  • Tell your child they will be pretending to be a dinosaur that eat fish. Give your child fish crackers, and have your child use paper plates (or blue construction paper) as their “lake” to keep the fish.

  • Ask your child how many fish are in your lake right now (0). Say eight fish swam near the “dinosaur” and have them put eight fish in their lake. Say that two more fish swam near, and have your child add two more fish. Ask how many fish they have altogether now (10).

  • Tell your child how happy the dinosaur is to have ten fish. Have your child eat them all. Ask how many fish are now in the lake (0).

Hidden Toppings

  • Tell your child you are making a “pizza” (paper plate or construction paper circle) with hidden “toppings” (flat, round counters or paper circles).

  • Show three toppings on your pizza, and then cover them with a dark cloth. Add two more toppings one at a time under the cloth. Ask your child how many toppings there are and how they figured it out. Uncover the toppings to count with children to check. Repeat with new numbers.

  • This activity can be recreated as a cooking experience. Your child can assist with making a pizza. Have your child place and count the amount of toppings during process.

Finger Games

  • Have your child make numbers with their fingers. Ask your child to show 5 with their fingers, and discuss responses: How many did you show on one hand? How many did you show on the other? How many fingers showing altogether? Ask your child to show another way to make 5, using both hands.

  • Repeat by asking your child to describe their actions, and alternate the following: show 4 on both hands, and show 4 different way; show 4 with the same number on each hand; and show 4 with one more on one hand than the other.

  • Have your child listen while you slowly drop 5 small counters in to a clean, empty can. After the first amount, pause, and then drop in 2 more.

  • Tell your child to show with their fingers how many marbles you dropped in all, and then count together.

  • Repeat, starting with up to 4 drops and then add 3 more.

Shape Parts

  • Give your child four straws. Secretly make a shape using the “straws,” such as a rectangle, and cover it with a dark cloth.

  • Tell your child to look carefully and take a picture in their minds as you show your shape for two seconds, and then cover it again immediately after with a dark cloth. Have your child build what they saw.

  • Show your shape for two more seconds so your child can check and change their shapes if necessary. During the finial reveal, have your child describe what they saw and how they build their own.

 

Material substitution: popsicle sticks, sticks from a tree, masking tape, paper cutouts, etc.

  • Secretly hide shapes and toys in the Feely Box. Have your child feel the shape or toy and describe it well enough without saying its name. Ask your child how they knew it was a certain shape or toy.

Shape Step

  • Use all of the following methods to make large shapes on which your child can step: use colored or masking tape to form shapes; make chalk shapes outside; enlarge and cutout large paper shapes.

  • Have your child step on the shape that matches your description, such as “only one pair of opposite sides” (trapezoid). Once your child finish stepping on shapes, ask your child to explain why the shapes they stepped on were correct.

  • Repeat with different properties, focusing on properties of your choice. Here are some guidelines: squares and rhombuses- four sides all the same; square- four sides all the same with right angles; and, parallelograms- two pairs of equal sides.

Shape step (Properties)

Use one of the following methods to make large shapes in which your child can step: use colored paper or masking tape to form shapes indoor or make chalk shapes outside. Have your child step on all (but only) the shapes that have the properties you describe.  For example, if you say “four sides all the same length,” they should step on all the squares and other rhombuses (but only those categories). When your child finished stepping on the shapes, ask him or her to explain why the shapes they stepped on were correct.  Repeat with different properties, focusing on properties of your choice.

Here are some possibilities:

  • Exactly 3 side (triangle)

  • Exactly 4 sides (all the quadrilaterals, including parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, and squares).

  • Four sides the same length with all right angles (squares)

  • Four right angles (rectangles, which include squares)
